HOME CARE PROVIDER EXTRA CARE OFFICALLY OPENS NEW HUB

HOME CARE PROVIDER EXTRA CARE OFFICALLY OPENS NEW HUB

Extra Care, Northern Ireland’s longest established domiciliary charity is proud to announce the creation of 10 new jobs in its new Cookstown office.

The expansion has come after the charity identified an increased need for home care services in the local and surrounding areas, as well as the need to have a presence in the community to support its Care Workers.

For over 80 years, Extra Care has been leading the way in how domiciliary care is delivered. The almost 350 strong team of Care Workers are trained to care for clients in their own home, all of whom have a varying degree of physical or mental health needs. Services provided range from domiciliary care, bespoke dementia care plans and mobile night services.

Care services are currently provided to clients across Northern Ireland including Antrim, Carrickfergus, Belfast, Ballymena, Lisburn, Ballyclare, Larne and Newry.

Jamie Smyth, Extra Care’s manager for the Cookstown area said, “We are so pleased with the expansion. Not only are we able to care for more people in the area, we are also able to offer jobs to Care Workers locally. After listening to our clients and identifying significant demand for our mobile night service, we are now able to increase our care service as well as provide consistent Care Worker support locally.

“We are currently recruiting Care Workers to join our experienced and expanding team. Extra Care prides itself on its excellent staff benefits, including flexible working hours, paid induction training and career development opportunities. We would love to hear from anyone who is interested in working in the care profession in the local area.”

Chief Executive of Extra Care Brian Hutchinson said, “Our goal is to ensure that we provide person-centred care, enabling people to remain in their own home for as long as possible, living with dignity and comfort.  As people’s needs change, we believe our support is at its most effective when delivered at home, where surroundings are familiar and the client is most content.

“The expansion and creation of new jobs in Cookstown is testament to the great service currently provided by the Extra Care staff across Northern Ireland. We are looking forward to provide care for people in the area.”

TOP BLADE SERVES UP £10 STEAK FOR BELFAST

TOP BLADE SERVES UP £10 STEAK FOR BELFAST

Belfast has welcomed its newest restaurant to the expanding food scene in the city, as Top Blade Belfast has officially opened. The new restaurant, specialising in flat iron steak, is the final tenant in the bustling St Anne’s Square development. Top Blade will serve the most affordable steak in the city, offering consumers their delicious flat iron steak for just £10.

Spearheaded by Lurgan businesswoman Zara Peden, the 42-seater restaurant occupies the unit formerly owned by Chopin. The restaurant boasts custom made tables and chairs crafted specifically for Top Blade, muted grey tones and industrial chic accents to complete the trendy inner city feel.  The restaurant’s menu focuses heavily on local favourites with sides including buttery champ and mixed greens as well as a tailored cocktail and drinks menu to accompany the hearty food selection. Vegetarians and vegans will have plenty of choice from the Top Blade menu with an array of sides and a specially created seitan steak.

Speaking on the launch of Top Blade, Managing Director, Zara Peden said, “We are delighted to finally unveil Top Blade to the people of Belfast and beyond. Steak is a firm favourite for people here and we believe that we have the best steak on offer, without charging our customers a premium. The restaurant has been months in the making and I am confident locals and visitors alike will love what we have to offer. We have teamed up with Carnbrooke Meats in Dromara to ensure our guests have the best steak possible without breaking the bank. From our side dishes, bespoke drinks menu and interiors, everything has been carefully considered and planned and I can’t wait for everyone to come along and try it.”

Speaking on the partnership with Top Blade, Jason Hamilton, Managing Director of Carnbrooke Meats said, “We have been saying for years that someone in Belfast needs to launch a dedicated flat iron steak restaurant and Zara has finally done it. People will be pleasantly surprised at just how good it tastes! The flat iron steak comes from the shoulder and the muscle called the top blade and is always a very tender and flavourful steak. There is often an assumption that because the steak is cheaper this will impact the quality, however this is not the case. We are confident people will love it.”

As well as the main flat iron steak, Top Blade will serve an additional steak each week to choose from. The restaurant is open daily from 4pm to 10pm. Top Blade will also offer a bespoke cocktail and wine menu as well as a tailored selection of beers and spirits.

BE TRANSPORTED BACK IN TIME DURING THE GREAT WORKHOUSE ESCAPE

BE TRANSPORTED BACK IN TIME DURING THE GREAT WORKHOUSE ESCAPE

Clip, clop your way around Newry in style! You may have been in the city many times on foot or visited by car, but have you ever travelled by horse and carriage? As part of the extensive events programme for this year’s City of Merchants, “The Great Workhouse Escape” will offer an interactive and fully immersive experience, which promises to be historical yet hysterical.

Be part of Marie and Daniel’s great escape from the Newry Workhouse as they attempt to flee the city, but by horse and carriage. You can hitch a 30-minute ride around the Merchant City, taking in the tales of the past, as you enjoy the sights from a whole new perspective.

The pony and trap tours will run throughout the day, offering rides to the public, leaving from Newry Town Hall. Tours depart every fifteen minutes from 11am to 3.45pm on Saturday 3rd November. Your journey will encompass historical sights, including Sugar Island, Needham Bridge and Merchant’s Quay.

Liz and Mervyn, from L&M Carriage Driving will be providing their horses and carriages for the event. “We love our horses and it is an absolute pleasure to share them with the people of Newry and beyond for this special occasion.  In the 18th century, horse transport was the only transport. Families would come to town to do their shopping. When sugar, coal or other goods came in off the boats, Clydesdale horses would have been used to do heavy lifting.  This event gives the public a unique opportunity to experience a side of history they aren’t familiar with.”

Deputy Chairperson Oksana McMahon said, “This particular part of the City of Merchants Festival is fantastic. I had the privilege of getting a sneak preview of the tour and it is so imaginative, not to mention unforgettable. The beautiful horses and carriages will make this event memorable for all ages. The fun theatrical elements and the important historical messaging are the perfect combination to share the city’s heritage.”

This is a free ticketed event. Tickets can be booked online at https://bit.ly/2Evl9jh

BEST FOOT FORWARD FOR CITY OF MERCHANTS HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR

BEST FOOT FORWARD FOR CITY OF MERCHANTS HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR

As part of the programme of events organised for this year’s City of Merchants, the Newry and Mourne Museum is once again hosting its highly anticipated walking tour culminating in a celebratory banquet at Bagenal’s Castle on Friday 2 November.

Focusing this year on Newry’s railway heritage, the tour will start at 2.30pm from the Museum, and will visit locations once occupied by stations, bridges and platforms. Participants will find out how the railway and port provided the foundation for Newry’s development as a mercantile centre on Carlingford Lough.

Starting at 5pm the banquet will be a sumptuous and enjoyable end to the walking tour. The menu consists of a cold meat buffet including a dressed salmon, ham and a choice of dessert, plus a glass of mulled wine.

Entertainment will be provided by Living History re-enactors who will perform songs and poetry inspired by the 1885 Golden Wedding celebrations of Newry MP and railway investor, Peter Quinn.

Peter Quinn was a merchant in Newry and served as a Justice of the Peace in the counties of Armagh and Down. He also served on the committee which issued the prospectus for the Newry, Armagh and Enniskillen Railway in the autumn of 1844 (the company was formed in 1845) and was on the Board of the Newry Navigation Company.

Speaking on Newry & Mourne Museum’s activities, Deputy Chairperson Oksana McMahon said: “It is great to see the return of the 2018 City of Merchants celebrations. The walking tour has proved extremely popular and it is a wonderful insight into the heritage and history of Newry as a Merchant town. By celebrating Peter Quinn through the banquet, it is a great way to acknowledge those that have helped build the trading legacy we are proud of.”

Numbers are limited and due to its high demand, we urge people to book tickets soon. Tickets are £10 and available from Newry Visitor Centre, Bagenal’s Castle Tel. 028 3031 3170

NO COVER UP NEEDED FOR MENTAL HEALTH

NO COVER UP NEEDED FOR MENTAL HEALTH

Make Up Pro Store, using its artistic right of expression, has designed a campaign image to mark this year’s World Mental Health Day (Wednesday 10 October) called “you are worth more than your darkness”. It is created in the hope to draw much needed focus to help those in the creative and wider community receive the support they are entitled to.

Created by founder of Make Up Pro Store and international makeup artist Paddy McGurgan, it has been designed in a bid to shine a spotlight on the growing levels of mental health issues within the creative and beauty sectors and the need for action as well as funding from Stormont. According to Action Mental Health, 1 in 5 adults in Northern Ireland will at some point in their life experience mental ill health.

Speaking on the campaign, Paddy McGurgan says: “As we scroll through pictures on social media we are often blind to how many of us battle with our own darkness. People forget that they are comparing their inner self with those that project their outer self on social media – generally an aggregated and inauthentic portrayal of reality.

“My rationale behind our Mental Health awareness image was to depict the two sides of the ‘selfie generation’; the one we portray in public and the side we keep hidden behind our social media veils.

“We work within an industry focused on making people look and feel better about themselves. Creating a makeup look is quite a personal experience. However, more and more clients are wanting to morph into their iconic screenshot instead of wanting the makeup applied to celebrate their unique and individual beauty.

This campaign is aimed at opening the conversation around mental wellbeing and the need for greater support, not only for creatives but the wider community.

Paddy adds: “Whilst many in the beauty industry prey on the insecurities of their social media followers for their own opportunism, I feel a sense of responsibility to use make-up not only creatively, but positively, and not adhere to a culture of acceptance on the quest to create a real-life filter. We are calling on everyone to reach out, speak out and Make Change Happen.

“I am also calling upon politicians to get back to work and extend the funding available for mental health. Together we can make change happen.”

Speaking on behalf of Action Mental Health, Jonathan Smyth, Fundraising and Communications Manager says, “The topic of Mental Health is huge right now. Funding from the health budget is around half of what it is in England and unfortunately there is a much higher need here in Northern Ireland. Sadly, we have the highest rate of suicide in the UK and Ireland. We support around 3,000 adults each year with a diagnosed mental illness and we reach out to over 20,000 children, young people and their carers each year to deliver emotional resilience and mental health awareness programmes. Having support from Make Up Pro Store, Paddy and his team is fantastic. It is all about creating platforms to have important conversations about mental health and this unique campaign from the makeup brand is the perfect opportunity.”

World Mental Health Day, recognised by The World Health Organisation, is on 10th October 2018 and Make Up Pro Store will be hosting a special charity demo night in Belfast on 25th October with all ticket sales going to charity. Tickets cost £10 and can be purchased instore or online by visiting https://bit.ly/2Pp5inp

FOYLESIDE SHOPPING CENTRE SEES INCREASE IN SHOPPERS FROM THE SOUTH

FOYLESIDE SHOPPING CENTRE SEES INCREASE IN SHOPPERS FROM THE SOUTH

Foyleside Shopping Centre is experiencing an increase in customers travelling from the south of Ireland to shop, exchanging their euro spending for sterling to get the best value for money. Currently, as the exchange rate is 89 pence to the euro, if you live in the south and choose to shop in Northern Ireland, there are significant savings to be made(1).  The centre has seen a 20% increase in southern shoppers since the euro became stronger in 2016.

According to Numbeo, the world’s largest database of user contributed data, consumers shopping in Letterkenny will spend on average an additional 29% on clothes and shoes compared to those consumers shopping in Derry.(2)

Fergal Rafferty, Centre Manager for Foyleside Shopping Centre said, “We are finding that many of our customers are travelling from the south to do their shopping, given the strength of the euro against sterling.  This trend tends to be cyclical over the years, dependent on currency fluctuations and we are reaping the benefit. Derry is the primary shopping destination in the North West region and with all of the top brand names available we continue to build on this customer loyalty.”

With the on-trend Autumn / Winter fashion looks hitting the shops at Foyleside Shopping Centre, the savings to be made whilst shopping there are evident.  Here are a few top trends that you will also find in nearby Letterkenny and the savings are clear.
